When The Qur’an Arrives in Your Grave | The Other Side: Barzakh and Beyond Ep. 20

Debt follows you into the Barzakh. The soul remains suspended until its dues are settled, held back from its final destination.

The Qur’an is the light in your darkest moments, the voice that will defend you when no one else can, and the companion that will never abandon you. But what happens when you abandon it?

The Prophet ﷺ described a terrifying fate for those who neglect the Qur’an. The words of Allah are meant to fill your heart, not collect dust on a shelf. In life, the Qur’an is your refuge. In death, it is your only defense.

Will it be your savior in the grave, or the proof against you?

NOTE: All depictions of Barzakh are purely conceptual and only vocals were used in the making of the soundtrack.

  1. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Verily, the one who has nothing of the Qur’an in his heart is like a home in ruins.” [Jami’ at-Tirmidhi #2913]
  2. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Last night two individuals came to me (in a dream), woke me up, and said to me, ‘Proceed!’ … So we continued on until we came upon a man lying down, and another standing over him with a rock. The standing man would hurl the rock onto the other’s head, crushing it, and the rock would roll away. He would then follow the rock, retrieve it, and before he returned, the man’s head would be restored as it was before. Then he would strike him again, repeating the same action. I said, ‘SubhanAllah! Who are these two?’ They replied, ‘As for the man you saw whose head was being crushed with a rock, he is the one who took the Qur’an but then abandoned it and neglected the obligatory prayers.’” [Sahih al-Bukhari  #7047]
  3. Abdullah ibn Mas’ud said: “Whoever recites Surah Al-Mulk every night, Allah will protect him from the punishment of the grave. During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we used to call it Al-Mani‘ah, the one that protects. Whoever recites this surah from Allah’s Book every night has done much and done well.” [An-Nasa’i, As-Sunan al-Kubra]
  4. The Prophet ﷺ said: “If the Qur’an were written on a skin and then thrown into the fire, it would not burn.” [Sunan ad-Darimi]

Regarding this narration, Ibn Qutaybah said, “Yazid ibn Amr narrated to me that he asked Al-Asma‘i about this hadith, and he said: ‘It means that if the Qur’an were placed within a person and then he were thrown into the Fire, he would not burn.’ Al-Asma‘i intended to convey that if Allah grants a Muslim knowledge of the Qur’an and enables him to memorize it, then the fire will not burn him on the Day of Judgment even if he is cast into it due to his sins.” [Ibn Qutaybah, Ta’weel Mukhtalif al-Hadith]

  1. Abu Umamah said: “Memorize the Qur’an or recite it regularly, and do not be deceived by these physical copies of the Qur’an, for Allah does not punish a heart that contains the Qur’an.”  [Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah]

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Indeed, the Qur’an will meet its companion on the Day of Resurrection when his grave is opened, appearing like a pale man. It will say to him, ‘Do you recognize me?’ The man will reply, ‘I do not recognize you.’ The Qur’an will say, ‘I am your companion, the Qur’an, that made you thirsty during the scorching days and kept you awake during the nights. Every merchant benefits from his trade, and today you will benefit from all of your trade.’” [Musnad Ahmad]
